Fascial Distortion Model in Physiotherapy
Anatomical Perspective and Treatment Techniques
The fascial distortion model is an anatomical perspective where the underlying cause of most musculoskeletal injuries is seen as one or more of six specific pathological distortions of the body's connective tissues.
- Myofascial Release: This technique involves applying sustained pressure to release tension in the fascia, aiming to improve flexibility and reduce pain.
- Soft Tissue Mobilization: Physiotherapists use hands-on techniques to mobilize and manipulate soft tissues, including fascia, to enhance range of motion.
- Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM): Specialized tools are used to apply controlled pressure to the fascia, helping to break down scar tissue and improve tissue mobility.
- Trigger Point Therapy: Manual pressure or techniques like dry needling are used to release trigger points, which are tight spots in muscle tissue that refer pain to other areas.
- Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Alongside manual therapy, specific exercises are prescribed to address fascial restrictions and support proper movement patterns.
